Lauzon vs. Calandrelli Feud Escalates

by WCFighting.com

February 8, 2008

Aleppo Shriners Auditorium

99 Fordham Road

Wilmington, Massachusetts

The feud between UFC Veteran Dan "The Upgrade" Lauzon and Renzo Gracie Brown Belt Andrew Calandrelli

has heated up in the past couple of days. The feud apparently started with a posting on the popular MMA

Underground forum when Andrew Calandrelli questioned why the UFC chose such a young fighter in Lauzon

to fight in the most recognized MMA organization in the world. Calandrelli implied that there were other

fighters in the area that were much more deserving of the opportunity than Lauzon. In a recent interview on

Cageside Live radio both Lauzon and Calandrelli argued the situation and their dislike for each other at

length. Lauzon feels that Calandrelli took a shot at him with the posting and issued a "winner take all"

challenge. Later in the interview older brother Joe Lauzon joined in the argument to clarify the challenge. In

this challenge both fighters would put up their entire purse (including any win bonuses) and the winner of the

fight would take all. According to WCF promoter Joe Cavallaro, this would be something entirely up to the

fighters to do on their own and outside of the promotion because the promotion's responsibility is to pay the

fighters according to their contracts.

Regardless of whether or not the fighters follow through with their challenge, the match-up is a very intriguing

match-up of styles and could present the UFC Veteran his toughest challenge to date. Andrew Calandrelli is

a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Brown Belt under the legendary Renzo Gracie and possesses a very wide array of

submissions with half of his victories coming by way of submission stoppage. Lauzon on the other hand

possesses very solid wrestling skills and heavy hands from both the standing position and on the ground.

The fight is very important for both fighters as Calandrelli looks to put himself on the International MMA map

by defeating a UFC Veteran while Lauzon is looking to work his way back into the UFC.
