Mari’s Minute Full Rules Muay Thai Recap \ Results April 5, 2007 San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino 777 San Manuel Blvd. Highland, California
It may be getting a bit cliché but when it fits...it fits - Another great night of Full Rules Muay Thai fights presented by Dennis Warner & In Sync Productions, Inc - nine exciting bouts had about 3,000 fans in attendance very pleased with lots of action that ran the gamut from knockouts to judges decisions. Here is how it all went down.
Fight 1 A ready Yamato Miura used his high kicks to do some damage on his opponent Austin Alhegren. Miura dominated the fight with his high kicks that took Alhegren down for a count at the end of the first round - Alhegren was able to beat the 10 count but was unsuccessful in the second round where once again, Miura connected with a beautiful high kick to Alhegren’s face that took him down for the second time. The referee immediately stepped in as it was obvious that Alhegren was knocked out cold. Miura wins by knockout at :16 of the second round.
Fight 2 This was an easy win for Evgeni Khil who took on Bo Zhang for four rounds of action. Although Zhang connected with sporadic power punches throughout the three minute rounds, Khil dominated and connected with accuracy. Khil’s persistence gave him the unanimous decision from all judges scoring it 39-37 x 3.
Fight 3 The fan favorite Freddie Medrano wins a unanimous decision over Steven Garret after a three round (two minute per round) bout. There was lots of action from these two warriors. The first round ended with Medrano connecting with strong knees from one end of the ring to the other - giving him the round. Garret was able to come back in round two - connecting and becoming more of the aggressor, which in my eyes, gave him the round. Then came the third and final round in which Medrano’s corner guided him well. Medrano was able to come in and dominate the round with his aggressiveness and once again, connecting with his knees and punches that were effective in the first round - giving Medrano the win. Congratulations!
Fight 4 Claudia Vidaurri wins a judges unanimous decision over Jamie Scolastico. I’m always excited to see two determined women go at it - And they didn’t disappoint. Both ladies went at it for all three rounds and a more experienced and precise Vidaurri took the win with all judges scoring the bout 28-27. Scolastico was able to connect with some good combo punches but overall, Vidaurri dominated by connecting with clean strikes. Congratulations ladies for putting on a great fight for the fans!
Fight 5 Joe Schilling wins over Gary Wheeler at :53 of the third round. This was the bloody bout of the night. Both fighters giving it there all but unfortunately, Wheeler got the worst of it. In the first half of the third round, Schilling was able to connect with consecutive knees to Wheeler’s forehead that opened up a big gash and out came the blood. The referee immediately stepped in to have the doctor look at the cut. After the doctor assessed the cut, the referee stopped the bout - Wheeler was unable to continue. Schilling wins by TKO.
Fight 6 With an impressive high kick, Kang EN wins by knockout over Joe Sarkissian (who didn’t even have time to get a feel for his opponent). EN ended it quick at about :15 into the first round. Sarkissian, with lots of trouble, was able to stand at the 10 count but when he was asked to take step forward, it was obvious that he was still hurt as his knees gave and wobbled. The ref stopped the fight and gave EN the knockout win.
Fight 7 Jared Lara wins over Chris Gallardo at 1:53 of the third round. The first round was pretty even as both connected well. A more aggressive Lara came out for the second round - Lara was able to connect and counter effectively. Whatever they told him in his corner, it worked and gave him the round. In the third round, Lara was able to land with a strong overhand punch that took Gallardo down for a count - Gallardo was able to beat the 10 count but was too exhausted and was unable to block another great overhand punch from Lara which finished the job. Referee stops the fight and declares Lara winner by way of knockout.
Fight 8 Jiangtao Dong defeats the crowd favorite William Sriyapai on a majority decision after five rounds of action. In my eyes, this was a controversial win for Dong. I had Sriyapai up three rounds to two. It was a tough fight to judge as both fighters gave us lots of back and forth action. Sriyapai was the aggressor in round one and connected a little more. At the end of round two, Sriyapai connected with an accidental kick to the groin area which landed him a one point deduction which will come into play later. I gave the third round to Dong as he was able to dominate the round with his punching. The final two rounds I also gave to Sriyapai as he was able to surprise Dong with short elbows as well as strike more effectively. And with the final scores reading 48-46, 47-47, 48-46 for Dong, the one point deduction cost Sriyapai at the very least a majority draw. This, to me, was the fight of the night.
Fight 9 Pongsak Chewchan defeated Pascal Benmati at 1:15 of the first round. Chewchan dominated the fight and was able to connect with an elbow that knocked Benmati out - and before the referee started his count, Benmati’s corner threw in the towel. Benmati was already hurt and didn’t appear to have a chance. His corner did the right thing and prevented further damage.
Once again, a fantastic job by all involved - putting on another great show at the San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino. And as usual, the fights ended early enough to do some gambling before heading back home:-) Congratulations to all the fighters and don’t miss Dennis Warner’s next MMA event at San Manuel on May 3rd. Hope to see you all there.
Until next time, Mari
