Floyd Mayweather Relinquishes His Super Light Title To Fight In the Welter Division

Floyd Mayweather, World Superlight Monarch has relinquishes his title as he is moving up to the welter

division to contend for another organization's title.

For the above reason, the World Boxing Council is declaring the World Superlight title as vacant and is

ordering No. 1 Junior Witter, of Great Britain to face No. 2 DeMarcus Corley of USA. As of today the

free negotiations period will begin for both of them to reach an agreement, and if that doesn't happen, the

WBC will then hold a purse offer on April 27, 2006.

The winner of this bout will have to fight the official mandatory challenger yet to be designated.

Floyd Mayweather has been a WBC Champion in three different divisions. He won the Superfeather title on

October 3, 1998 with a victory by TKO8 over Genaro "Chicanito" Hernandez. He defended the title eight

times.

He conquered his second championship, this time in the lightweight category, by defeating Jose Luis

Castillo by points on April 20, 2002; he made three defenses.

On June 25, 2005 he won his third title in the superlight division, with a TKO6 over Arturo Gatti.

Last January 31, during the night of champions in Cancun, Floyd Mayweather was awarded by the World

Boxing Council as "Champion of the Year."

Mayweather has stated that he expects to win the welter title and right after that to come back to the WBC

to fight for its welter championship.

DeMarcus Corley and Junior Witter both top-notch fighters, will dispute the world superlight belt

The world WBC superlight belt, now vacant after Floyd Mayweather relinquished it, will certainly have a

new holder as the two designated boxers to dispute it are both top-notch fighters.

They are rated as No. 1 and 2 of the WBC Ratings; we are talking about British Junior Witter and North

American DeMarcus Corley.

Witter is currently European, British and Commonwealth champion in the superlight division and his record is

33 wins (19 KOs), two ties and only one defeat. He was born in Bradford, England 32 years ago and began

his professional career in 1997.

His most recent performance was on October 21, 2005 in which he defeated Colin Lynes by points in 12

rounds.

On the other hand, DeMarcus Corley, was born 31 years ago in Washington. He is a southpaw that started

his professional career in 1996. He was world superlight champion of another organization. Of all his

victories, 17 were by KO. His last fight was on September 17, 2005 where he overpowered Johnny Walker

by TKO in 9 rounds.

In case both parties don't reach an agreement, the WBC will hold a purse offer on April 27, 2006.
