U.S. Sombo Newsletter

January 2, 2006

- From the Vice President:

Greetings friends, fellow grapplers, wrestlers, and martial artists,

Happy New Year! 2005 was busy year for the sport, and I think that we will have much to cheer about in

2006 as a result of the developments of this past year. The World Sombo Championships will be held in

October in conjunction with the World Beach Wrestling Championships in Turkey. At this point, other events

are still under development. Once a national and international schedule of events is available, I will include it

in the newsletter.

In this issue, Shaun Scott, a veteran of many world cups, will recap the final FIAS World Cup of Sombo

from Nice, France. The results were listed in last month's issue and reprinted in this month's issue. This

month we will focus on the Americans at the world cup. If you have story ideas, or suggestions relating to

future issues of this newsletter, please drop me a line at teamusa@sombo.us.

Yours in Sombo,

Lance Campbell

Vice President, United States Sombo Association

Final FIAS World Cup
by Shaun Scott, USSA Treasurer

Team USA from the U S Sombo Association tied for third in the 2005 FIAS World Cup Sombo tournament

held Sunday Nov 27. The tournament was held in Nice, France, for the sixth consecutive time. The

participants competed in sporthall Serge Leyrit following the Deglane Challenge International Olympic

Wrestling Tournament, which was held there Friday-Sat Nov 25-26.

Iran won the team title, with a strong French team second. Team USA tied for third the Canadian team--

which had two individual champions. Italy was a new entry, with one champion. Bulgaria, a perennial entry,

failed to bring a team.

Justin Higgins of Tampa, FL, represented Team USA at 120kg and won the gold medal. In the finals match

against a Frenchman, Justin gained a quick submission with a knee bar. This was Higgins' first World Cup

competition, but he had previously took second in the 2004 FIAS World Championships in Orlando, FL.

Khassan Baiev at 84kg took second behind a tough Canadian fighter. Taking third in the weight class was

Iran, over whom Baiev won a hard fought 1 point victory margin. Baiev, who now lives in Massachusetts, was

a World Cup Champion for Chechneya in 2001. Hassan also had won the 2004 FIAS World Championships

in Orlando, as well as a previous third place world finish in 2002.

Shaun Scott at 96kg took third behind a tough international freestyle gold medalist from Canada and an

Iranian. This was Shaun's 9th consecutive world cup medal. He was given a special honor by the French

organizers as the God-Father of the tournament since he has been the only competitor to compete in the

tournament every year in Nice. Scott is a 6 time world medalist.

Organizers also presented USSA Vice President Lance Campbell with a special award in recognition of his

efforts to field an American team for the world cup in 2003, 2004, & 2005. Campbell won the silver medal at

the world cup in 2000 at 90 kg, and a silver in 2001 at 100 kg. In 2002, no official team was sent to the world

cup, but Scott and David Bonner (USSA Secretary) both made the trip and represented the U.S. in the world

cup. Since 2003, Campbell has served as the organizer and administrator of Team USA, and Scott has been

the team leader.

2005 FIAS World Cup

The last World Cup of Sombo Wrestling to be held in Nice, France, under the direction of FIAS finished with

exceptional sombo skills and exciting matches, as well as some strong results from new participating

countries (especially Iran, Canada and Italy). Of course, in 2006 FILA will take over direction of all sombo

competitions held under the FIAS banner, with Josh Henson as President, and other cooperating sombo

organizations to bring a new unity to the sport.

A Strong Iranian team came out on top in the final results of the team competition at the 2005 World Cup of

Sombo Wrestling held at sporthall Serge Leyrit in Nice, France, on Sunday Nov 27. Both Iran and France I

(represented by the all star Nice Wrestling Club) had six medals. But Iran had two gold medals to one for

France I, to capture the World Cup title.

Sombo Returns To FILA

FILA, the international governing body that sanctions the two Olympic wrestling styles, freestyle and Greco

Roman announced that they will resume control over sombo in 2006! FILA made the announcement on their

quarreling over the role of governing international sombo. As a result of this, FILA reached an agreement with

one of the organizations to resume control over the sport. FILA will organize a World Championship of

Sombo in Antalya, Turkey in October. The tournament will be held in conjunction with the World Beach

Wrestling Championships.
