Arlovski Delivers First Round KO, Defends UFC ® Heavyweight Title Against Buentello At UFC 55: Fury Griffin TKOs Sinosic, Hinkle Defeats Gannon
Uncasville, CT. – The Ultimate Fighting Championship® (UFC®) organization tonight delivered a series of knockouts at UFC 55: FURY held live from the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT.
In the heavyweight championship main event, Andrei “The Pit Bull” Arlovski delivered a split-second right hand fifteen seconds into the first round, rocking Paul Buentello to the ground. Buentello was not able to recover, and the referee stopped the fight. Arlovski was declared the winner, proving himself as the true UFC heavyweight champion. Following his win, Arlovski said, “I was a little aggressive for this fight. I was confused at first, but I kept my mind straight, going for his body. Then I just used my right hand to his face. I just wanted to win my fight. This was the fastest fight in my history. The next time I fight it will be eight seconds.”
Buentello said, “I’ll be back. I was caught off guard. I felt that I could still keep fighting. Arlovski shot in on me, and that was a good move.”
As the UFC 55: FURY co-main event, Forrest Griffin also scored a first round knockout, defeating Elvis Sinosic with a strong right hand at 3:22 into the match. Griffin said, “I think Sinosic rocked me, but I didn’t care because the fans liked it. But then I found myself rocking him back, and I got lucky with the knockout.”
Sinosic said, “I went in with a game plan to feel him out in a stand-up fight. I was able to rock him a few times, and I was looking for the takedown, but one of his punches caught me on the eye, and then I couldn’t see the others coming. We’ll see what happens next.”
In a feature fight, Boston native Sean Gannon took on Branden Lee Hinkle in a much anticipated heavyweight matchup. In the first round, Hinkle wrestled Gannon to the ground. Gannon struggled to pull away, but Hinkle fired a series of strikes to the face. Gannon wasn’t able to recover and the referee called the fight at 4:14 of the first round. After his victory, Hinkle said, “I feel great. I could have done a lot better. I feel that it wasn’t the greatest win. I showed I’m the hardest puncher in the world. I want to continue fighting and I don’t want to have to worry about anything else.”
Gannon said, “I didn’t stick to my game plan. He was able to take me down. I feel that I let the UFC down, because it’s a big step up from club fighting. Branden was too good of a wrestler.”
Joe Riggs took on Chris Lytle in a middleweight fight that lasted two rounds. During the first round, both fighters wrestled on the ground, with Lytle working Riggs from underneath. Then, Riggs fired a number of strikes right before the end of the first round, forcing a cut to Lytles’ face. In the second round, Lytle reversed a takedown attempt by Riggs and wrestled him to the ground. Shortly after, the referee stopped the fight due to sustained injury, giving the victory to Riggs.
Riggs said, “I feel I didn’t fight very well, but I got the victory. It’s different fighting in the welterweight division, the guys are little, and it’s a little easier.”
Lytle said, “I did my best, I didn’t feel like I was hurt.”
following a second round tapout by Sonnen. Sobral dominated most of the fight, nearly pulling Sonnen into an ankle lock right before the end of the first round. Early in the second round, Sobral threw a strong leg kick sweeping Sonnen to the ground. Sonnen tried to pull away, but Sobral maneuvered him in a triangle choke forcing a tapout at 1:20 of the second round.
Sobral said, “I feel awesome, I expected Sonnen to stand with me, but I trained a lot for this fight and stuck to my game plan, and just caught him in a great submission hold. For this fight, I focused on my cardio, but for my next fight I’m going to focus more on technique. I want to fight Forrest Griffin and not only do I want to fight him, I want to knock him out.”
Sonnen said, “I stuck to my game plan for the fight, unfortunately I got caught in a triangle choke. It was already applied before I could stop it. But I’m coming back, I want to fight again.”
