June 28, 2007

Irvine Marriott

Irvine, California

The fighters enter the squared circle, the bell rings and the first fight of the night is under way - Paul Karsky

throws a high kick and it's over folks - his opponent is knocked out. Roy Englebrecht's SummerFist 2007 got

off to a roaring start at the Irvine Marriott Ballroom Thursday night with a six second knockout that had the

capacity crowd standing on their feet in amazement. But that wouldn't be the only first round sub-20 second

win of the night.

Both Mark Kempthorne and Ian McCall won their bouts in 13 seconds, respectively. The fourth fight of the

night saw Unbreakable Gym's Kempthorne and his opponent, Alex Guitar, come out swinging, exchanging

strikes with Guitar getting caught with a solid punch to the face that dropped him to the mat - Kempthorne

followed up with some strikes before the ref jumped in and stopped the bout. The next bout on the card saw

Ian McCall get a take down and immediately start with the ground & pound on his opponent Rick McKoral

that also caused the ref to jump in and stop the bout.

But all was not quick - In the second fight of the night, Kelvin Nimsiriruengphal went the three round

distance with Tyler Weathers - picking up a hard fought decision win. Nimsiriruengphal was able to get the

take down in the first - looking for some ground & pound but Weathers defended well - Weathers was able

to attempt a few arm bars from the bottom but Nimsiriruengphal was able to pull out of them.

Nimsiriruengphal also managed a slam in the first. The second round saw much of the same -

Nimsiriruengphal looking for the take down and getting it, working from the top position while Weathers went

for another arm bar at the end of the round. The third round played out different as Nimsiriruengphal shot in

for a leg and missed allowing Weathers to get his back. From there, Weathers started pounding away,

looking to get his hooks in for a possible rear naked choke but it was too late - the round ended with the

judges seeing Nimsiriruengphal winning two of the three rounds.

Carlos Fuentes out of Team Camacho also went the three round distance in the semi-main event with

Team Wildman's Lucas Taber - walking away with a split decision win. The first round saw both fighters go

to the mat with Taber on top - Fuentes got an arm and looked for a submission but Taber was able to pull his

arm out. Taber was in Fuentes' full guard, trying to work the ground & pound - Fuentes was able to reverse

position giving Taber a chance at a triangle choke at the end of the round but Fuentes was able to pull out.

The second round saw a brief exchange before the fighters tied-up with Fuentes landing some knees - Taber

then got a take down and eventually got Fuentes' back - Fuentes was able to turn and Taber went for an

arm bar but Fuentes was able to pull out. The round ended with Fuentes in Taber's guard, trying to work the

ground & pound. The third and final round saw Fuentes land a good stiff left jab that popped Taber's head

back. They tied up and Taber went for a guillotine choke but Fuentes was able to get his head out. The round

ended with Taber getting Fuentes down and getting his back. A close fight but Fuentes got the judges nod.

Team Oyama's Martin Bautista came away with the nights only submission win in fight number three.

Bautista attempted an arm bar in the first round against his opponent Richie Collingham - only to have

Collingham slam out of it. Collingham worked the ground & pound for much of the first and in the second

round, got a slam right before getting caught with a triangle choke that forced him to tap.

The main event for the evening saw Team Oyama's Carlos Quilon come out on top over Noah Shinable -

Once on the ground, Quilon started with the ground & pound from the top and at one point, Shinable looked

like he was out - his arms falling to his side but the ref was out of position and Quilon had no choice but to

start pounding away again and this time, the ref saw and jumped right in and stopped the bout putting an

end to a great night of fights.

All bouts were scheduled for three rounds (three minutes each round) unless noted.
