Diego Corrales and Jose
Luis Castillo Return In Epic Rematch On October 8!!!
Las Vegas - Three-time world champion Diego 'Chico'
Corrales and two-time world champion José Luis
Castillo, who earlier
battled in one of the century's most fiery, historic fights, will return
in a world lightweight
championship bout at the
Thomas and Mack Center on Saturday, October 8, airing LIVE on Showtime PPV
beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m.
PT.
Top Rank and Gary Shaw
Productions in association with Caesars Palace and Wynn Las Vegas will
present
"UNO MAS!. . . ONE MORE TIME!"
-- the encore match of Corrales vs. Castillo.
Corrales vs. Castillo will be
available Live! on Showtime Pay Per View.
Corrales and Castillo traded
devastating punches and each fought bravely in what many have called 'the
epic
battle of our time' in their
May 7 title unification bout in Las Vegas. Corrales, 40-2 with 33
knockouts, arose
from the canvas twice to stage
a historic rally and stop Castillo, 52-7-1 with 46 knockouts, in the 10th
round.
The fight drew sensational
'best ever' reviews:
"In a finish reminiscent of a
Rocky movie, Diego Corrales twice scraped himself off the deck in the 10th
round and rallied to stop José
Luis Castillo," wrote Kevin Iole of the Las Vegas Review Journal.
"I say put the tape of the
entire fight in a film vault, right next to 'Citizen Kane.' This is as
good as it possibly
gets," wrote Mike Katz
in Maxboxing.com
"I've seen every major fight since 2000 and have seen thousands of tapes
of fights back to the 1940s and I
can honestly say I've never
seen such a great fight," said Dan Rafael on ESPN.com
"A fight for the ages," said Tim Dahlberg of Associated Press.
"Going into the fight I said this was going to be a fight of pride, a
fight of honor," said Corrales, "and to be in
a fight with a great champion
like Castillo was an honor. I said it was going to be a war of attrition
and it
was."
Castillo, the World Boxing
Council (WBC) champion going into the first fight, twice knocked down
Corrales
hard in the 10th round. Each
time Corrales, while down on the canvas, spit out his mouthpiece which
allowed
him to gain precious seconds
to recover as his corner man rinsed out the mouthpiece and replaced it.
"Every second is precious when
you are down on a canvas," said Castillo. "Corrales, by spitting out his
mouthpiece, had valuable time
to recover."
Corrales, down twice, then
returned to action and struck Castillo with a very hard left and followed
with
additional hard punches to
stop him and win the fight.
It was a dramatic, sensational
finish as Corrales retained his WBO lightweight title and won the World
Boxing Council (WBC)
lightweight title belt.
Both of Corrales' world title
belts will be on the line Oct. 8. Corrales, native of Sacramento, Calif.,
trains in
Los Angeles and resides in Las
Vegas, NV. Castillo lives and trains in Empalme, Mexico.
The undercard will feature Carlos 'Famoso' Hernandez
of El Salvador vs. Bobby Pacquiao; a fiery rematch
between Jorge Arce of
Mexico and Hussein Hussein of Australia plus, as an extra added
attraction,
undefeated teenage sensation
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. who will box in a six-round bout.
Hernandez, 41-5-1 with 24
knockouts, is rated WBC #5, WBO #5 in the 130-pound weight division.
Hernandez, who lives in West
Covina, Calif., is a former IBF junior lightweight champion and is
scheduled to
box 12 rounds on the
Corrales/Castillo championship card.
Arce, 40-3-1 with 30
knockouts, is the interim WBC flyweight champion. Arce, who has 20
straight wins
dating to 1999, will be in a
rematch against Hussein, 28-2 with 20 knockouts, of New South Wales,
Australia. This fight is
scheduled for 12 rounds.
On March 19, Arce stopped
Hussein a wildly-fought battle which went nine rounds. Arce hurt Hussein
early
in the bout, but Hussein
rallied in the exciting, fast-paced battle in which both fighters landed
hard shots.
Finally, after Hussein was
knocked down in the 9th, his cornermen halted the bout.
Chavez Jr. is the undefeated
teenage son of the legendary three-time world champion Julio Cesar
Chavez.
Chavez Jr. has won his first
20 professional fights and has excellent technical skills. Like his
father, Chavez
Jr. likes to hook to the body
to wear down his opponents.
Tickets for Corrales vs. Castillo are $800, $600, $400, $200, $100, $50
and $25 and are available at the
Thomas and Mack box office
