Jose Rivera Injured

"I was very disappointed when I heard that Rivera got injured. But I wish him well. I have been training for four

months. It doesn't matter who I defend against, I will fight any of the other champions. I just want to fight."

~ Daniel Santos

New York - Don King Productions announced Tuesday that Jose Antonio Rivera suffered a training injury

late last week that will prevent him from participating in the world title match on Saturday, September 3 on

SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast). Promoters are

currently seeking an opponent for WBO Junior Middleweight Champion Daniel Santos.

A Don King Productions spokesperson addressed the media today with regard to Rivera's injury and the

status of the upcoming world title fight. The following are excerpts from that call.

DKP: Rivera saw noted Boston physician Dr. Bill Morgan recently. Morgan had been the Boston Red Sox

team physician until this year and is best remembered for successfully treating Curt Schilling's ankle

problems during last year's baseball playoffs and World Series. He has previously performed successful

surgeries on Rivera including to his thumb and wrist.

Rivera saw Morgan early last week complaining of chronic pain in his left elbow. Rivera sparred on Thursday

and blocked many punches with his arms. He awoke on Friday to find his condition had deteriorated to the

point where he could not extend his left arm. After consulting with Rivera by phone, Morgan recommended

surgery; therefore Rivera cannot fight Santos on Sept. 3.

Don King Productions is currently seeking out an opponent to replace Rivera, and we will notify you when we

have further information.
