The North American Amateur Fight Series Results "Ultimate Glory"
March 18, 2006 Chapparell’s Community Center Akron, Ohio
- Special Thanks go out to Greg Kalikas (Prokarateweekly) for the following information:
took another step towards crowning it’s first ever amateur champions. Akron, Ohio hosted the second round of the NAAFS 2006 series as sixteen fighters representing six states brought their A-game to the North Coast in hopes of locking down a spot in the year end finals set for December.
Steubenville, Ohio’s Dustin Kempf (Next Level Fight Team) now 4-1 made his claim for the # 1 slot in the featherweight division as he took out a very feisty Keith Kolbacher of Jamestown, NY (Team Air-Gadfly) via Rear Naked Choke in round one.
Kohlbacher’s teammate, Dustin Bloom, won his second straight fight as he outlasted Tyler Superman Combs in one of the most exciting fights of the night. Combs was able to catch Bloom while standing but the tide turned once Bloom was able to force the action from the ground and finished the fight via guillotine in the closing moments of round one. Combs who is now 1-1 in NAAFS competition at 170 lbs, will likely move back down to 155 lbs for the remainder of the 2006 series.
West Virginia’s Jason Jones was impressive on his way to a submission win over Cleveland’s Frank Nerone. Both fighters took the fight on one days notice due to last minute injuries and put on a memorable performance, but in the end the experience of Jones paid off with a first round win. Jones improved to 5-2 and will be tough to beat at 205.
Pennsylvania’s Josh McBride (North Eastern Pummeling Den) improved to 2-1 with his latest win over Maryland’s Troy Canfield (Eternal MMA). McBride is coached by UFC veteran Todd Butler and is quickly climbing the welterweight ladder.
In a very action packed fight, Carl Dean Roff (Ruff Ryders Fight Club) was able to submit Akron’s Johnny Murphy (Royce Gracie Jiu Jitsu) late in round one in a light weight battle. The local rivals wasted no time as they took to the center of the cage in front of their hometown fans in what was a fight to remember. Look for both fighters to take part in upcoming NAAFS events.
In the nights featured bout, Dover, Ohio’s Jason “The Freebird” Freeman (Vander Fighting Systems) out struck Flat Rock Michigan’s Andrew Lambrix to improve his record to 3-0 as a heavyweight. The former high school wrestling stand out and amatuer kickboxing champion has now turned his attentions to MMA full time and has his sites set on eventually moving down to the light heavyweight division. Freeman is expected to make his pro debut in Cleveland’s Fight Nite in the Flats 2 event set for the Scene Pavilion this June 10th.
The third round of the NAAFS series is tentatively scheduled for May 6th in New Philadelphia, Ohio. An official announcement will be made within the next week to ten days.
