Mari's Minute King of The Cage Recap \ Results "Point Of No Return" October 7, 2007 Soboba Casino San Jacinto, California
Another great night of fights at Soboba Casino this past Sunday night. The thousands in attendance were treated to a total of 17 fights and believe it or not, the last fight was over before 10pm. It worked out perfectly since Monday was a holiday (Columbus day) for a lot of people. The night was all about stand up - Most fighters went toe-to-toe with each other - plus a controversial referee stoppage, a couple of great knockouts and some powerful ground-and-pound action rounded it all out. Here is how it all went down.
Under Card Action The night started off with a bang as we saw Isaac Newman-Gomez knockout Jason Windeh at :49 of round one. “The Scorpion,” after a quick exchange, was able to connect with a perfect left high kick to Windeh’s face knocking him out.
Then came the second bout with a controversial referee stoppage - Tim Humphry vs. Rob Rosales. Round one began and they circled the cage. Rosales was first to act with a punch and then a brief exchange. They dropped to the mat in Humphry’s corner and Humphry worked his way to top position. From top position, Humphry was able to connect with some clean punches to the head but Rosales was still blocking. Humphry’s corner starts yelling continuously at the referee - “He is out, he is out.” Then the controversial ending - the referee stepped in and stopped the fight. Rosales stood up not understanding why the referee had stopped it and a lot of us also wondered the same thing. From my view, Rosales wasn’t out at all, his hands were still up defending and he was still moving around from bottom position in defensive mode. From my perspective, it looked to be an early stoppage - perhaps influenced a bit by the comer yelling at the ref. To that end, to that point, Humphry looked like he was going to win anyways but it was sad to see the match end in that manner.
We also saw some great ground-and-pound action from Sal Farnette - who defeated Anthony Mendez at 4:26 of round one. Then Rick Legere showed his ground-and-pound game on Robert Doucet after picking him up and slamming him on his back and winning at :46 of round one. As for other under card action, Frankie Guerrero and Matt Buckley gave the judges a tough fight to score. Both fighters stood toe-to-toe and gave the fans lots of back and forth action. Frankie Guerrero took the split decision win after two (five minute) rounds. Jesus Morales defeated Alex Rickards by uncontested strikes at 3:04 of round one and then Gunnar Hinson defeated Greg Guzman by arm bar submission at 4:16 also in the first round. And for the last of the under card fights, Frank Park defeated Rick Jones with an impressive win by knockout. A determined and powerful Park was able to block some great punches from Jones - then took three consecutive right hooks to the face before landing a right hook of his own, followed by leg kicks and then the powerful left hook that knocked out Jones. Check out the interview we did with Park after his impressive powerful win later this week.
Main Card Action Paul Arras took a quick win over Greg Leinan. 19 seconds is all it took for Arras to rush in and connect with punches - left and right, dropping Leinan to his knees. Leinan was unable to get a hold of the arms and received more punches. Leinan stopped the punishment by tapping out.
John Lober won over Damieon Gomez at 3:20 in round one. Lober was able to secure an arm bar half way through the round but Gomez didn’t tap. Lober then sat up instead and started connecting with strikes to the face before the referee stepped in and stopped the fight. It appeared that Gomez had injured his arm from not tapping and couldn’t defend anymore. Gomez walked away holding the injured arm.
Then for the knockout of the night, Roch Worthy landed a right hook to Dave Cryer’s face knocking him out in only :09 seconds of round one.
Next, Melvin Costa battled it out with Angelo Mcleroy who put on a great fight and showed some ground skills - reversing mount positions. Round two was all Acosta, who didn’t stop pressing and connecting with punches. Acosta won over Mcleroy at 2:12 of round two due to uncontested strikes.
And for the main event, William Sriyapai took on Chai Sirisute. Sirisute gave Sriyapai a battle. Sirisute was successful on the ground as was Sriyapai showing off his Muay Thai skills. Both fighters went at it. Sriyapai was able to connect with precise punches to the body and face in addition to leg kicks for most of round one. Then Sirisute came back to end the round in full mount, controlling and connecting with strikes to the face. The second round went about the same. Sriyapai dominated the stand-up action, connecting with strong punches to the body and face. But once again, Sirisute was able to get a full mount and connected towards the end of the round - but this time, Sriyapai was able to get back up, ending the round on his feet. Sriyapai took the judges unanimous decision after two (five minute) rounds of action.
As for the After Card action... It all went pretty quick - all four fights ended in the first round. Jeremy Bennett defeated Ricky Gunz at :29 - who after losing, was upset and started ranting all kinds of curse words wanting to take it to the streets. I’m still unsure if he wanted to take on the winner again or the referee. Either way, he was upset at what he thought was an early stoppage by the ref. I didn’t see it that way, it appeared to be a good stoppage. Gunz had to be escorted out. Travis Havens knocked out Daniel Nova at 1:12 from a punch to the face. Andy Jewett took the win over Edgar Irizarry at 3:43 due to uncontested strikes and Geno Salomone took a submission win over Fabian Diaz - Salomone was able to secure an arm bar at 2:04.
Until Next time, Mari
