Mari's Minute Invincible Fighting Championship 6 Recap \ Results June 21, 2008 Ontario Convention Center Ontario, California
It may sound cliché, but when the shoe fits....It was a great night of fights at the Ontario Convention Center this past Saturday night - Invincible Fighting Championship rocked the house with eight mixed martial arts bouts that gave those in attendance something to talk about. 16 fighters vied for the coveted big "W" (Win) and here is how it all went down:
A quick submission win by Tony Dalton started off the night. Dalton got the “W” in just 24 seconds of first round due to a guillotine choke over David Gomez.
Next up, Roberto Vargas did battle with Brian Aguirre. Unfortunately for Aguirre, it was a disappointing pro debut for him. Vargas dominated the ground game and just didn’t let Aguirre do anything. In the third round, Vargas took Aguirre’s back and connected with punches to the side of the head until the referee, Mike Beltran, came in to stop the fight. Vargas walks away with a TKO win.
The Heavyweights were up next - Cameron Adams from Shark Tank took on Ronald Lebreton representing Riverside Submission. Lebreton was able to get the takedowns and ground control throughout the fight and after three (three minute) rounds of action, Lebreton got the unanimous decision win.
Chris Black was next to join the “W” club with a victory over Miguel Linares. Linares attempted a rear naked choke early in the first round but was unsuccessful. In a scramble, Black moved to top position, then into north\south position. Black then got a guillotine choke and the submission win at 2:05 of the round.
The fight of the night followed with another explosive win by the 18 year old Junior Kling. Kling just keeps improving, upping his pro record to three wins in three fights. Kling took on Musa Toliver who came in with great confidence and indicated that he wanted a piece of Kling. You could feel the tension build up from both fighters that apparently started the night before at the weigh-ins. A brief exchange got this battle started - then Toliver went for a single leg but the shoot was defended well by Kling who held on. They went toe to toe most of the round with Kling connecting with cleaner and stronger strikes. In round two, Toliver got the early take down but Kling had no problem getting back up. Kling then received punches to the face but didn’t appear to feel a thing. Kling continued to connect with the cleaner shots and powerful punches leaving Toliver with a swollen left eye....which closed up more as the round went on. Kling then took it to the ground - ending up in half mount and Toliver looked gassed. Kling connected with more strikes to the face from half mount before they got back onto their feet. Kling landed beautiful right, left hook combos and Toliver decided it was better to go to the ground but was dominated there as well. Kling, from side mount, finished the round with a powerful knee to the body. A hurt Toliver got to his corner but before round three began, the referee waived fight the fight off as Toliver’s corner told the referee that it was over. Toliver was unable to continue giving Kling the second round TKO win.
Next, a quick win from Phillip Brown over Dominic Verdugo. Brown was able to submit Verdugo at 1:33 of round one due to a choke from the north\south position.
The other set of heavyweights followed, Catalin Zmarendescu vs. Huston Smith. Zmarendescu dominated the fight - connecting with powerful shots. In round two, Zmarendescu ended up in top position connecting with strikes that lead Smith to end up on all fours. Zmarendescu, from side mount, connected with two damaging powerful knees to the body while Smith was in that position. Smith was done after that and the referee knew it....stepping in to stop the fight at 1:54 of round two.
Then came the main event...and the blood fest. “Mr. Unbreakable” Brian Warren took on Brandon Magana for a three (three minute) rounds of action. In round three, Warren connected with what appeared to be an elbow to the top of the head of Magana that opened up a big gash - and the blood started pouring out. Both fighters appeared to have bathed in blood but in the end, it was going to be up to the judges - Magana was the quicker of the two and connected with better strikes and the judges seemed to have agreed as they awarded the unanimous decision win to Magana with scores of 30-27, 29-28, 29-28.
A scheduled fight between Ismael “Rocket” Gonzalez and Josh Williams was cancelled due to what was described as a medical technicality but will take place at Invincible Fighting Championship's next event. For more information, check out Invinciblefighter.com
Until next time, Mari
