Mexican Warriors Marquez, De Leon & Lazcano All Battle

In Texas on Saturday, October 21 Live on pay-Per-View

EL PASO – When it comes to their fighting styles, interim WBO featherweight champion Juan Manuel

Marquez, WBO super bantamweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon, and junior welterweight contender

Juan Lazcano are worlds apart.

Marquez is a deadly counterpuncher who, like an assassin, patiently waits for his opening to strike, and

when he finds it, it’s lights out for opponents. On the other hand, every punch De Leon throws is meant to

score a knockout, and when he lands, the results are often spectacular. And let’s not forget Lazcano’s fiery

passion in the ring as he looks to break down his opponents punch by punch.

But despite this disparity in styles, Marquez, De Leon, and Lazcano have one thing in common – their

commitment to excellence as they uphold the storied reputation of the Mexican warrior.

On Saturday, October 21, from the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas, WBO featherweight champion

Juan Manuel Marquez defends his title against Jimrex Jaca, WBO super bantamweight champion Daniel

Ponce De Leon battles Al Seeger and El Paso's own Juan Lazcano takes on Manuel Garnica in an all-

star tripleheader presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Romanza Productions Inc. This

memorable night of action will be broadcast live on HBO Pay-Per-View at 9 p.m. ET/ 6 p.m. PT.

“I love watching Marquez, De Leon, and Lazcano fight, but all for different reasons,” said Oscar De La Hoya,

President of Golden Boy Promotions. “Marquez for his technical brilliance, De Leon for his sometimes

reckless fury, and Lazcano for his relentless will to win. This card has something for everyone, and I’m

looking forward to a great night.”

“With fighters like Juan Manuel Marquez, Daniel Ponce De Leon and Juan Lazcano all on the same card,

Mexican fight fans can expect an exciting, action-packed night on pay-per-view,” said Mark Taffet, Senior

Vice President of HBO Sports and pay-per-view.

In the main event, Juan Manuel Marquez defends his newly won interim WBO featherweight title against

Filipino warrior Jimrex Jaca. Already a hugely popular fighter in his home country, the dangerous Jaca would

like to take that acclaim worldwide if he can score the upset over Marquez, who is determined to get past

his young challenger and force some of the big names at 126 and 130 pounds to fight him in the near future.

The WBO super bantamweight title bout between Daniel Ponce De Leon and Al Seeger should be a

barnburner. Then again, any fight involving the wild-swinging champion usually turns into a classic. And even

though De Leon has rapidly established himself as a rising superstar, he can’t overlook the well-rounded

challenger from Georgia, who has his own boxing dreams to attend to on October 21st.

Rounding out the pay-per-view broadcast is a WBA title elimination bout between Juan Lazcano and Manuel

Garnica. Both fighters have had their ups and downs in the ring but have courageously persevered, and

whoever scores the victory on October 21st will have made it all the way back to the top, where a

championship bout awaits.

Tickets, priced at $200, $100, $75, $50, and $30, went on sale on Saturday, September 16, 2006 and can

be purchased by calling (915) 747-5234 or by visiting www.utep.edu/events and www.ticketmaster.com.

One of boxing’s best, pound for pound, Juan Manuel Marquez (45-3-1, 34 KOs) has thrilled fight fans for over

13 years with his pinpoint accuracy and fight ending power. Best remembered for his thrilling 12 round draw

with Manny Pacquiao in 2004, Marquez is a former WBA and IBF featherweight champion with four

successful defenses to his credit. In August, he added the interim WBO featherweight title to his resume

when he stopped tough Terdsak Jandaeng in seven rounds.

An exciting southpaw known as “The Executioner”, Cebu City’s Jimrex Jaca (27-2-1, 12 KOs) is one victory

away from joining his countryman Manny Pacquiao as a Filipino boxing superstar. Winner of four of his last

five bouts, three by early knockout, the 23-year-old Jaca always comes to fight and his style has garnered a

legion of fans from Tokyo to Las Vegas.

A star in the making, thrill a minute super bantamweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon (29-1, 27 KOs)

gets more impressive with each victory. A native of Chihuahua, Mexico, the 26-year-old southpaw won his

first world title on October 29, 2005, when he outpointed Thailand’s previously unbeaten Sod

Looknongyangtoy over 12 rounds. After a second round knockout over Gerson Guerrero in his first title

defense, De Leon would meet Looknongyangtoy again in July, but this time, the rapidly improving champion

was in fearsome form as he knocked his challenger out in just 52 seconds in what will most likely be voted

Knockout of the Year for 2006.

De Leon’s challenger, Al Seeger (27-1, 21 knockouts), goes by the nickname ‘The Quiet Storm’, but his

recent performances have been anything but quiet. Winner of eight in a row dating back to 2004, the

Savannah, Georgia native holds a win over former world champion Eric Aiken, and he also avenged the

only loss of his career on April 14 when he stopped Phillip Payne in four rounds. Most recently, the IBA

super bantamweight champion halted Cesar Morales in just two rounds.

Charismatic contender Juan Lazcano (36-3-1, 27 KOs) made his name in the fight game as one of the top

lightweights in the world. Now at 140 pounds, ‘The Hispanic Causin’ Panic’ (who is a hometown hero hailing

from El Paso) is ready to take on the best at junior welterweight. Currently riding a three fight winning streak,

Lazcano has recently scored wins over Courtney Burton and Ben Tackie in his campaign at 140.

A native of Guadalajara, 31-year-old Manuel Garnica (20-5-, 11 KOs) had given up on boxing after a close

1999 decision loss to John John Molina. But in 2005, Garnica decided to give the fight game another shot,

and in August, he scored one of the biggest upsets of 2006 when he scored a unanimous 12 round decision

over former world champion Carlos Maussa to win the WBC Latino and WBA Fedcaribe titles.

The Marquez vs. Jaca pay-per-view telecast, beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT has a suggested retail price

of $34.95, will be distributed domestically by HBO Pay-Per-View and will be available to more than 56 million

pay-per-view homes. For more event information log onto www.hbo.com.
