Pound For Pound King –
Battle Of Champions
WBC Junior Welterweight
Champion, Floyd Mayweather Jr., will square off against Former
2-Time World Champion
Sharmba Mitchell November 19 at the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon
PORTLAND, Ore. - “Pretty
Boy” Floyd Mayweather Jr. will take his 34-0 record and WBC
Junior
Welterweight Championship belt
to the Pacific Northwest where he will square-off against former 2-time
World Champion Sharmba
Mitchell (56-4) in a special 12-round Welterweight bout being billed
as the
“Pound for Pound King – Battle
of Champions” at the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon on November 19.
The undefeated Mayweather Jr.,
who has successfully defended his title 14 times and recorded 23 KO’s in
his 34 wins, is universally
recognized as the best pound-for-pound fighter in boxing. He is coming off
a
successful world title fight
this past June with a dominant sixth-round TKO against defending champion
Arturo Gatti.
"Undefeated in 34 fights,
champion in three different weight divisions, fought all the best, pound
for pound
king and last, but certainly
not least, I'm the prettiest---but nothing can compare to the anticipation
and
excitement I have to perform
for the great people of Oregon in what I believe will be the ‘Greatest
Show On
Earth’ at the Rose Garden,”
boasted Mayweather.
Pound for Pound King - Battle
of Champions is being promoted by Goossen Tutor Promotions and televised
live on HBO. Jordan, a
division of Nike, Inc. is the presenting sponsor of the event.
“The sport of boxing demands
that the athlete be in the best physical condition possible to succeed,”
says
Larry Miller, president
of Jordan. “Mayweather is one of boxing’s most talented and feared
fighters, whose
discipline and work ethic is
unmatched. His dedication to training mirrors the Jordan brand philosophy
and
attitude. All of us at Jordan
are very excited to be a part of this event.”
This will mark the second time
within a three-year period that Portland has hosted a major professional
boxing event. The first was
September 7, 2002, when the preeminent boxer of that time, Roy Jones Jr.
challenged Clinton Woods
of England. Jones Jr. landed a sixth-round TKO on Woods which was also
held
at the Rose Garden in front of
14,000 fans.
“The Little Big Man” as
Mitchell is known, a skilled boxer with 31 KOs to his credit, has won 25
of his last 27
bouts, with those two losses
at the hands of highly regarded former world champion Kostya Tszyu,
who had
made 11 straight title
defenses.
“This fight has all the right
elements,” said promoter, Dan Goossen, of Goossen Tutor Promotions.
“We’ve
got the most gifted young
fighter on earth today in Mayweather, fighting against an experienced
two-time
world champion in Mitchell, in
one of the most beautiful cities in the world. You match that with the
Jordan
brand as our presenting
sponsor in front of a packed Rose Garden Arena on November 19th, and I
guarantee
the Portland fans will be in
for a great show.”
