Golden Boy Promotions'
Biggest Month Ever Concludes With Back To back HBO Megacards
LOS ANGELES - The basketballs have been stored away and the NCAA’s March
Madness is now history.
Now it’s boxing’s turn, and
Golden Boy Promotions, in association with AEG, is ready to present
perhaps
the most explosive month in
the history of the sweet science.
Beginning with a show on
Saturday, May 20th, at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, and concluding with
another epic card on Saturday,
May 27th at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, some of the
greatest fighters in the world
– including Marco Antonio Barrera, Rocky Juarez, Jorge
Rodrigo Barrios,
Jhonny Gonzalez,
Fernando Montiel, and Daniel Ponce DeLeon - will be displaying
their wares for
fight fans watching both live
and on HBO.
“I’m amazed at the amount of
talent and competitive matchups that we’re going to be able to provide to
boxing fans in May,” said
Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya, who kicks off the
month
with his own mega bout against
Ricardo Mayorga on May 6th. “I’ve personally never seen a pair of
shows
like this back to back, and
I’m excited that I’ll be able to just sit back and be a fan on both
nights.”
The May 20th event at STAPLES
Center, which will be televised live by HBO World Championship Boxing
beginning at 10:30pm ET /
7:70pm PT, features the return of the legendary Marco Antonio Barrera
(61-4, 42
KOs), who will defend his WBC
Super Featherweight world championship against 2000 US Olympic Silver
medalist Rocky Juarez (25-1,
18 KOs) in a highly anticipated 12 round battle.
In the co-featured bout,
Argentinean bomber Jorge Rodrigo ‘La Hiena’ Barrios (45-2-1, 32 KOs), one
of
boxing’s most exciting
fighters, defends his WBO Junior Lightweight crown for the second time
when he
faces Hungary’s unbeaten Janos
“The Bone Cracker” Nagy (23-0, 14 KOs).
Just seven days later, on an
HBO Boxing After Dark televised card (10:00pm ET / 7:00pm PT) at the Home
Depot Center, two more world
championships will be on the line. In a main event that has historical
implications, WBO Bantamweight
champion Jhonny Gonzalez (32-4, 28 KOs) - a concussive puncher with
either hand – will get a stern
challenge from one of boxing’s best, pound for pound, WBO Junior
Bantamweight champ Fernando
Montiel (32-1-1, 24 KOs), who will rise in weight to try to win his third
world
title in a different weight
class.
Another WBO champion, Junior
Lightweight king Daniel Ponce DeLeon (27-1, 25 KOs), will defend his title
for the first time in the
co-main event, when he takes on unbeaten Mexican prodigy Alejandro
Barrera
(18-0, 12 KOs).
Also featured on May 27th is
an intriguing welterweight clash between highly regarded contenders
Walter
Dario Matthysse of
Argentina and Paul ‘The Punisher’ Williams of
Augusta, Georgia. Combined, these
two 147-pound standouts boast
a record of 52-0 with 43 knockouts. Unbeaten rising star Abner Mares
(8-0,
5 KOs), a member of the 2004
Mexican Olympic team, will also be in action.
