Interview With GC Heavyweight Champ Dave Huckaba
PL: First off, how does it feel to be back with Gladiator Challenge? DH: It’s great. It’s good to have the hardware, and I don’t think anyone is going to beat me in this organization; I will own the division here. In my last fight, anybody I fought that day I would have beaten; I had plenty of motivation. To be honest, my feelings were hurt by getting my belt taken away. But now I've got it back, and I don't plan on gi ving it up. I would love to fight exclusively for GC, and I hope that day comes. If it does, you’ll never see this belt on another heavyweight’s waist.
PL: In your fight with him, Rick Randolph seemed to be doing well on the ground in the 1st round, but you came on stronger in the 2nd. What are your thoughts on the fight? DH: It went exactly as planned. My cardio is out of control right now; I train like a champion. In fact, I am training in Vegas with Randy Couture, I’ve recently brought God into my life, and I am just working so hard. In that fight, I outweighed Randolph 244 lbs. to 208 lbs.; he simply can’t hold me down. I felt his strength leaving him, his punches getting weaker as time went by. I knew that he would gas on the ground, so I wanted him to take me down. It took him double the strength, and I capitalized. I really wanted to knock him out, and he did try his stand-up, but it didn’t go well for him, so he went back to ground. I visualized that fight, and it went as I had expected.
PL: What are your thoughts on Rick Randolph? DH: I have nothing bad to say about him; he’s a great fighter. But I felt like I took 10 or 12 shots of his best shots on the ground; it only took 2 of mine to end his night. You have to evolve, you can’t stay the way you are, and that's what I want to make sure I'm doing.
PL: The crowd was going absolutely crazy for you; did that influence your performance at all? DH: In GC, I’ve never lost because I will not lose in front of my home crowd. The backing is there, God’s on my side now, and the momentum is there. When I’ve lost, it’s been in other areas where I don’t have fans. In front of a GC crowd, I will not lose. The fans mean that much to me.
PL: You have just agreed to fight MMA legend Dan Severn; how does it feel to face a pioneer like him? DH: Right now, it feels absolutely awesome. It’s perfect timing for me, I’m too hungry, and I have a lot of momentum on my s ide. Dan’s older, and no disrespect, but his prime is past. I punch very hard. I have a lot of respect for him, so I just hope everything ends safely for both of us.
