Bowe vs. Zumbrun

Ward vs.  Ashworth

April 7, 2005

Pechanga Resort and Casino

Temecula, California

Heavyweight Bout (10 Rds)

Riddick Bowe (42-1, 33 KOs) wins a split decision over Billy Zumbrun (18-6-1) - Judges scored the bout

95-93 Zumbrun, 96-92 Bowe, 96-92 Bowe.

The obvious difference between the two was weight - Zumbrun came in at about 220 lbs. while Bowe (former

undisputed heavyweight champion) weighed in at about 280 lbs. in his second fight since December of 1996.

Zumbrun was a lot quicker than Bowe, as expected, and stunned the ex-champ a few times throughout the

bout but Bowe did have a flash of his former self - basically just utilizing the jab throughout the fight although

Bowe did land a good left hook in the fourth that put Zumbrun down to one knee. But without the jab, Bowe

looked to be fighting in slow-motion. And Bowe himself got caught in the corner at the end of the fifth round

and was being peppered with shots when the bell sounded...another 10-20 seconds and who knows. Bowe's

corner stated that he had only been training for three weeks for this fight and that he should improve in the

future.

Middleweight Bout (6 Rds)

Andre Ward (3-0, 1 KO) wins by disqualification at 2:56 of the 3rd round over Roy Ashworth (3-2) - Referee

stopped the bout after Ashworth continued to hit Ward in back of the head after being told to break.

Ashworth was warned many times throughout the three rounds for rough tactics and had a point deducted in

the first and third rounds. The first round was ugly, holding and hitting even while the ref tried to break them

up which caused the ref to say something to the effect of - Stop acting like fools, this is live tv. Ward was

able to put Ashworth down with an uppercut in the third round before Ashworth got DQ'd.
