Mari's Minute Fatal Femmes Fighting Recap "War of the Roses" November 3, 2007 Ontario Convention Center Ontario, California
Fatal Femmes Fighting: "War of the Roses," held this past Saturday night at the Ontario Convention Center, was a successful follow up to their July 14th (2007) event - "The Crystal Brawl." The hundreds of fans in attendance were treated to seven outstanding, action packed bouts. For those of you who missed the last two Fatal Femmes Fighting events, make sure you don't miss the next one - and witness firsthand the fierce and competitive nonstop action the ladies demonstrate in the cage. Here’s how Saturday nights action went down:
The night started off with a great win for Cindy Hales over Shawn Tamarabushi. Hales was able to keep her focus in round one after receiving some powerful punches that stunned her for a moment. Hales was able to work her submission skills with the guidance of her corner and secured an arm bar and got the tap at 1:30 of the second round.
Next came Sally Krumdiack and Allison Duckworth who went toe-to-toe for three (three minute) rounds. All three judges scored the fight 29-28 in favor of Krumdiack - I, on the other hand, saw it the other way and so did the fans as they booed after the winner was announced. Duckworth was able to get more take downs and connected with a flurry of punches a couple of times throughout the fight. And while Krumdiack was able to secure a full mount and connect with strikes to the face in round three, Duckworth bridged out of it and looked more dominate in the round.
Now, for the fight of the night. The crowd favorite Brandy Nerney from Rancho Cucamonga put on an awesome performance taking on a resilient Yukiko Seki. Every second of every round was non-stop action from these two ladies. They both came out swinging but Nerney was able to connect with more powerful and better punches. They tied up early in round one and Nerney’s back ended up against the cage. Seki was able to connect with knees to the inner thighs from that position but Nerney was able to scramble out soon after. Nerney connected with powerful punches - one after the other to the face. Seki didn’t give up and stood her ground and still moved forward ending round one. Seki started the second round as she finished it - moving forward but once again, Nerney was able to connect with hooks to the face and then got a judo throw taking Seki to the mat. Seki ended up on all fours and Nerney, positioned over her, connected with a flurry of punches. Seki eventually was able to stand back up. A resilient Seki continued to press forward, just going for it, giving it her all and was able to connect with punches to the face slowing Nerney down a bit. Nerney was looking a little more exhausted towards the end of the round and that allowed Seki to connect a little more. The bell for the third and final round sounded and they picked up where they left off. Seki still pressing forward, was able to connect while Nerney’s back was against the cage but after a scramble, Nerney got away from the cage and was able to continue to connect with her right, left combos that connected almost every time. After some back and forth action, the round ended once again with Seki pressing forward and Nerney connecting with punches to the face as she moved backwards. Awesome fight - Nerney took home the unanimous decision win.
And speaking of unanimous decision wins, Christina Riddering got one over Karina Taylor. Taylor was able to connect with some great punches but Riddering was able to control the fight even when she was on her back.
Then came the ground and pound action from Sofie Bagherdai over Michelle Ould. The crowd favorite Bagherdai didn’t disappoint her fans at all. She came in and attacked and didn’t stop for a second. The referee came in and stopped the fight after they went down and Bagherdai, from top mount, started pounding away. It took her 1:58 to end the fight. Ould got up asking the referee Cecil Peoples why he stopped it - from my view, it looked to be a good stoppage.
The co-feature for the night saw Lisa Ward defeat the colorful Megumi Yabushita. Not much action between these two in the first two rounds. We finally saw some action in round three. Ward was able to connect with low kicks while Yabushita got a nice judo throw. A more active Ward took the unanimous decision win.
And the final bout of the night featured Vanessa Porto - who showed her impressive standing and ground skills over her last minute opponent, Hitomi Akano. Akano wasn’t able to get in her zone and get the take downs she was looking for. She did a good job listening to her corner (Josh Barnett) but Porto appeared to anticipate her every move and was able to dominate from the top and bottom. Porto was able to connect with punches to the face that slowed Akano down - As mentioned, Akano wanted to take the fight to the ground but even on the ground, Porto appeared to be more in control. Akano did connect with a heel kick while on her back that appeared to have broken Porto’s nose - It started to bleed quite a bit, but that wasn’t enough - Porto pulled out a split decision win.
Until next time, Mari
