Griffin – Jones for USBA Belt

On Friday, March 31, Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing proudly presents a night of ESPN2-televised world-

class boxing at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, featuring an exciting 12-round battle for

the USBA Light Heavyweight Championship.

In the night’s main event, former WBC champion Montell Ice Griffin, 47-6 (30 KOs), will attempt to further

his quest for a world title by facing durable veteran “StorminNorman Jones, 28-14-3 (9 KOs).

Chicago’s elusive and dangerous Griffin signed a promotional agreement with Star Boxing just a few months

ago. At the time, both fighter and promoter promised to immediately begin a campaign to regain the throne

Griffin lost to Roy Jones Junior.

The gutsy Jones is coming off a TKO 9 victory over Robert Marsh.

“It should be magnificent fight,” said DeGuardia. “Jones has an exciting style and has been gung-ho for this

fight since we contacted him about it. Montell, meanwhile, will be looking to make a statement and get back

into light heavyweight championship contention.”

35-year-old Griffin has come up short in two other world title shots and been on the wrong end of some highly

questionable verdicts throughout his career. Most recently, he lost a questionable six-round technical

decision to Julio Gonzalez for the # 1 IBF contendership.

“Montell is certainly a fighter who can carry on the proud Star Boxing tradition of working with light

heavyweight world champions and top contenders,” continued DeGuardia who also handles “People’s Light

Heavyweight Champion” Antonio Tarver, former top contender David Telesco and worked with former world

champion Lou DelValle.

Action will begin at 7:30 pm in the Mohegan Sun Arena, and will be televised live on ESPN2. Tickets go on

sale Thursday, March 2, and are priced at $75.00, $40.00 and $25.00, and are available through the

Mohegan Sun Box Office and Ticketmaster. Customers may log onto ticketmaster.com; call any

Ticketmaster phone number; or visit any Ticketmaster outlet.
