Maywood, California played host to Saturday night's California Combat Championships promoted by

Modern Gladiator and In Sync Productions. The hundreds in attendance were treated to five fights with the

main event featuring JoePlentee of SkillzCamacho against Anthony McDavitt for the lightweight

championship belt - and these two warriors battled it out. In total, seven fights were scheduled for the night

but the Adam Smith vs. Mychal Clark fight got cancelled as it was announced that Smith was involved in

an auto accident - but luckily, it was said that he is doing well. On the other hand, Clark announced that he

was ready to fight Saturday night and that he wasn’t really convinced of the auto accident excuse given. The

other fight cancelled was between Greg Dalton and Joey Alvarado. Alvarado was disappointed that Dalton

didn’t show up due to an injury that he suffered and that was that. Notables in attendance included Chute

Boxe USA Coach Roberto Piccinini, Albert Rios, Hector Pena and George Valdez (who will be inducted

to the Kickboxing Hall of Fame later this month). Here is how the night went down.

Fight 1: Albert Samniego vs. Hildred Oliney

Round One - They touched gloves, Oliney was first to strike with a Thai kick and they clinched. Oliney was

able to deliver a couple of knees to the face and opened a cut on Samniego. They scrambled and Oliney got

Samniego’s back for a rear naked choke attempt. They scrambled again and Oliney got full mount position

and pounded away. Samniego rolled to avoid head punches and rolled to his belly with Oliney now on his

back and ended it with the rear naked choke. Hildred Oliney won at 1:31 of the first round due to a rear

naked choke.

Fight 2: Mike Robles vs. Marvin Elias

Round One - Robles went for the double leg take down but Elias got a guillotine choke with Robles in top

position - Robles got out of it and they tied up on the floor with Robles in side mount but Elias was not

allowing the full mount and protecting well. Robles, from top position, was able to deliver a couple of punches

but not much harm was done. They round ended with Elias scrambling up to his knees with a guillotine

choke attempt but no harm.

Round Two - They both connected with low kicks early in the round and immediately took it to the ground

with Elias in full guard with no damage being done. They restarted in the center of the ring and Robles once

again got a take down but Elias was doing a good job keeping Robles close in full guard - not doing much

harm until the final seconds of the round when Robles was able to connect with consecutive elbows to the

face ending the round.

Round Three - Elias rushed in with a strike but changed his mind and they tied up. Once again, Robles

ended up in top position but was unable to pass the guard. Robles delivered a few blows from that position

but Elias did a good job in full guard. The round ended with Robles connecting with a few strikes while Elias

was in full guard. Mike Robles won a unanimous decision with all three judges scoring 30-27.

Fight 3: Javi Alanis vs. Jeff Willingham

Round One - They touched gloves and Alanis connected with a few low kicks. They scrambled and went to

the floor. Willingham ended up in top position and connected with a straight right to the face of Alanis and

fought to gain full mount - Alanis turned to avoid punches to the face and gave up his back. Willingham

attempted a rear naked choke but Alanis got out. Willingham continued to strike the head with strong

punches and that allowed Willingham to get under the neck for another rear naked choke attempt - and this

time he succeeded. Alanis taps and Willingham gets the win. Willingham wins by submission at 2:40 of

the first round due to a rear naked choke.

Fight 4: John George vs. Miguel Cosio

Round One - Cosio was first to strike with a low kick but George immediately went for a take down and they

scrambled to the ground. George appeared to stay in top position for just one moment as Cosio turned and

was able to get back up. They scrambled some more and George ended up in top position - and then got a

guillotine choke but was unsuccessful executing it. They scrambled on the floor and Cosio got out of the

guillotine and back up - George was on his back while Cosio connected with kicks to the legs. The crowd

went wild. George was able to kick Cosio away and that allowed him to get back up and take Cosio down

and got full mount. George started to pound - and just when you think he has the fight won, Cosio got the

reverse mount and started pounding away himself. Cosio connected with strong punches from full mount

and another reversal - but this time it's George's turn. George, now in full mount, bombs with hammer fists for

the last couple of seconds of the round.

Round Two - Cosio was first to strike with punches - George, using his body weight, took Cosio back

against the ropes and to the ground - George now in top position and in half mount. George got a heel hook

from half guard and tried to end it but Cosio fought through it and rolled out of the heel hook. They scrambled

and George once again in top position with full mount rolled to an arm bar. George held on tight and got the

tap from Cosio - The referee stepped in and stopped the fight and Cosio immediately asked what happen and

indicated he didn’t tap - Too late, the fight was over - George won by submission at 2:38 of the second round

due to an arm bar.

Fight 5: Anthony McDavitt vs. Joe Camacho

Round One - Camacho rushed in but McDavitt connected with a punch to the face. Camacho then connected

with an uppercut that cut McDavitt on the bridge of the nose. They tied up in the corner and Camacho was

able to connect with a knee from that position. McDavitt got away from the corner and into another corner

where he connected with a right, left hook combo that appeared to stun Camacho for a second. McDavitt

threw wild right and left punches that connected - and that took Camacho back to rethink his strategy.

McDavitt continued with his right and left hooks but they were blocked by Camacho and hit his gloves. They

stood head to head with McDavitt continuing with the wild punches and landing a few but Camacho moved to

the inside and connected with a knee to the body. McDavitt indicated to Camacho to come on and bring it

and the round ended a few seconds later.

Round Two - McDavitt with a kick to the body but it was caught by Camacho and Camacho countered with a

punch to the face - and that excited the crowd. McDavitt kept the fight on his feet and was still landing his

wild punches. They exchanged strikes - McDavitt doing a good job countering and connecting. Camacho

connected with a series of punches of his own followed by a left knee to the face that was partially blocked.

McDavitt went for the take down but Camacho didn't go. They continued with an even exchange of punches.

McDavitt worked the legs, with a couple of low kicks to Camacho. The final seconds of the round ended with

McDavitt’s punches going through Camacho's gloves.

Round Three - Camacho came in to touch gloves and McDavitt denied him that pleasure. Camacho pressed

forward as McDavitt circled the ring. Camacho kept the pressure up with his jabs. McDavitt’s wild punches

connected with power but Camacho’s jab landed right to the nose. McDavitt continued with his punches and

surprised Camacho with a spinning back fist that connected. The round ended with McDavitt connecting with

right and left hooks while Camacho backed against the ropes. Joe Camacho wins a split decision with

judges scores of 29-28 McDavitt, 30-27 Camacho and 29-28 Camacho.

Until next time,

Mari
