Tomonari Kanomata Storms to Victory In The Team Fightsport Lightweight Tournament

November 19, 2006

- Special Thanks go out to Ian Dean and Cagewarriors.com for the following information:

The 2nd edition of the Cage Warriors showdown series will be famous for the performances of the first

Japanese import in Cage Warriors history.  As the Shooto and D.O.G veteran Tomonari Kanomota made

a huge impact on the Sheffield crowd at CW Showdown 2, by winning all 3 of his bouts in the Team

Fightsport Lightweight tournament in just under 11 minutes.

Kanomata who was sent to Cage Warriors by G.C.M due to both companies’ links with the World Wide

Cage Network (WWCN) wowed the audience by defeating the American Bryan Cohen, the Englishman

Peter Irving, and Finn Jarkko Latomaki. (Who was also sent to Cage Warriors by fellow WWCN member

Nordic Fight Sport Promotions)  Kanomata will now face reigning Cage Warriors World Lightweight

Champion Alexandre "Xandinho" Izidro in early 2007.

The show took place in front of a capacity crowd at the Octagon Centre and was highlighted by the 7

tournament bouts , which was kicked off in style by local favourite Ian “M-16” Butlin, who advanced to the

semi-final and gained some retribution over his old foe Emmanuel Fernandez by defeating his student

Emmanuel Geay by TKO mid way through round 1.  Jarkko Latomäki also gained some revenge when he

made up for a disappointing performance in the EVT GP Lightweight Final in 2005 by defeating Thomas

Hytten on points in a closely fought encounter.  Latomäki edged out the experienced Norwegian with a composed performance after being under considerable pressure early on in round 1.

Tomonari Kanomota made short work of the overmatched American Bryan Cohen in the 3rd Quarter Final by

flooring him with a knee to the chest and quickly passing his guard before stopping him via ground and

pound early on in round one.  Whilst the 4th Quarter Final match saw Peter Irving advance to the semi final

by using his experience and skills on the ground to defeat the Wolfslair Academy’s Mick Sinclair in another

closely contested affair.

The Semi Finals saw Latomäki advance to the finals after forcing his way out of a triangle attempt by Butlin,

before submitting him with slick a rear naked choke after sprawling out of attempted takedown by the

Englishman.  Whilst the 2nd semi final saw Peter Irving test Kanomata early on by nullifying his ground game

for much of the fight.  However Irving’s reluctance to attack and make the most of his chances eventually

cost him and mid way through the 2nd round the Japanese star managed to finally control the ground game

and force the stoppage via ground and pound.

The final saw Kanomata’s dominance shine through again as he quickly dispatched the otherwise

impressive Latomäki by jumping into a flying triangle from the clinch and sinking it on after the Finn tried to

slam out of the submission.

Other highlights included the muscular Italian heavyweight Ivan Serati stop the last minute replacement

Riciardas Zlatkus from Lithuania.  Serati’s team mate Francesco Ligato ended a 2 fight losing streak by

submitting local fighter Richard Taylor via a kimura.  Whilst the Sheffield based kickboxers Scott Sykes and

Alex Mackenzie shone in front of their considerable home town support as they defeated the CW Strike

Force veteran Brett Healy and Fight Force’s Lee Chadwick respectively.

Overall this was another great night for Cage Warriors and their promotional company Warrior Promotions

as CW Showdown 2 found yet more new stars with Butlin, Irving and Latomäki raising their stock

considerably in the tournament.  Whilst the eventual winner Tomonari Kanomata stole the show and became

an instant fan favourite with 3 entertaining and impressive performances.

Kanomata will now face Alexandre “Xandinho” Izidro early next year for the Cage Warriors World Lightweight

Title.  Izidro who is 5-0-0 in CW competition, has already defeated 4 of the best European Lightweights in

succession and won the CW World Title outright in the last 15 months and will look to continue his unbeaten

CW streak when he faces the Japanese star at a CW event next year.

Cage Warriors will return on December 9th as they present “Cage Warriors: Enter The Rough House” at the

Harvey Hadden Centre in Nottingham.  This show features Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy face Alexandre

“Xandinho” Izidro for the vacant -73kg Title and will also see the long waited CWFC World Middleweight Title

bout between Pride veteran Gregory Bouchelaghem and the “2h2h Road to Japan” winner Jordan Radev.
