"When we had a venue fall out for our (Dec.16th) event, we saw that as an opportunity to move the event to Austin and honor Jesus for all that he has accomplished. It is important for us to recognize these great fighters and no one is more deserving than Jesus."
After winning his first world title against Sirimongkol Singwangcha on August 15, 2003, Chavez was set to be honored later that year in a center-ring ceremony, also at the Austin Convention Center. However, Chavez was unable to attend when he decided a couple a days before to get married in Las Vegas. "I was really looking forward to being there and personally thanking all the boxing fans of Austin for their support," Chavez remembers.
"But right before the event, my fiancé (Aunisa) got notification from the Army she was going to be going to Iraq soon, so we decided to go ahead and get married right away. It was one of those things where only something as big as getting married would have kept me from being there."
Now, Chavez returns to finally be honored in the same ring where he captured his first world title. Only his time, he returns as a two-time World Champion.
"It will be exciting to walk-in with the two world title belts," Chavez stated. "I want to be the one to tell the fans, face-to-face, how much I appreciate them and share these titles with them. It's going to be a great card
for the fans and an exciting
night for me, also." For more information on Golden Boy Promotions, please visit our website at www.goldenboypromotions.com.
