A Fight Night To Honor Two-time World Champion Jesus Chavez

AUSTIN, TEXAS - This past September 17, Austin's Jesus Chavez captured his second World Title when

he defeated Leavandor Johnson for the coveted IBF World Lightweight Championship.

It was also Chavez' first fight under the promotional banner of Golden Boy Promotions, headed by six-time

World Champion and Olympic Gold Medalist, Oscar De La Hoya.

On Friday, December 16th at the Austin Convention Center, De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions will

present "NIGHT OF HONOR," a nationally televised professional boxing event to officially honor Chavez for

his winning a second world title.

The six bout card, which begins at 7:00 pm, will feature world ranked lightweight contender, Javier

Jauregui (50-12-2, Guadalajara, Mx) battling Jose Quintana (12-9-2, 7 KOs) in the ten round main

The undercard will be headlined by 2004 Olympian Abner Mares, Jr. welterweight contender Ben Tackie

and local favorite Brian Vera, a former Texas Golden Gloves Champion.

Mares (6-0, Guadalajara, MEX) will be taking on Yaman Muhammad (5-9-1, Dayton, OH) in an eight-round

super bantamweight contest.

Tackie (26-5-1, Bronx, NY), a former world title challenger, will face off with Roberto Valenzuela (34-17-1,

31 KOs) in an eight round Jr. Welterweight bout.

Vera (7-0, Austin) will be fighting an opponent to be announced in six-round middleweight fight. The

remainder of the card is also to be announced. It is anticipated that additional Austin fighters will be added to

the card.

Tickets for the event are priced at $15, $20 and $35 (plus service charges) at all GetTix locations, including

Waterloo Records and Pinkie's Wireless stores. Tickets are also available online at or by

calling 1-866-443-8849.

For De La Hoya, the opportunity to honor Chavez in his hometown is something his Golden Boy Promotions

has been looking forward to. "We know how much Jesus loves Austin and how much the fans there care

about him," said De La Hoya from his Los Angeles offices.

"When we had a venue fall out for our (Dec.16th) event, we saw that as an opportunity to move the event to

Austin and honor Jesus for all that he has accomplished. It is important for us to recognize these great

fighters and no one is more deserving than Jesus."

After winning his first world title against Sirimongkol Singwangcha on August 15, 2003, Chavez was set

to be honored later that year in a center-ring ceremony, also at the Austin Convention Center. However,

Chavez was unable to attend when he decided a couple a days before to get married in Las Vegas. "I was

really looking forward to being there and personally thanking all the boxing fans of Austin for their support,"

Chavez remembers.

"But right before the event, my fiancÚ (Aunisa) got notification from the Army she was going to be going to

Iraq soon, so we decided to go ahead and get married right away. It was one of those things where only

something as big as getting married would have kept me from being there."

Now, Chavez returns to finally be honored in the same ring where he captured his first world title. Only his

time, he returns as a two-time World Champion.

"It will be exciting to walk-in with the two world title belts," Chavez stated. "I want to be the one to tell the

fans, face-to-face, how much I appreciate them and share these titles with them. It's going to be a great card

for the fans and an exciting night for me, also."
