Nate Campbell (22-0, 20 KO's) wins by Knock out in 43 seconds of round three over Daniel Alicea (27-5-2, 20 KO's) - Campbell NABF/NABA  Jr. Lightweight Champion

 

Fight 2 - 10 Round Super Lightweight Bout

Miguel Cotto (12-0, 9 KO's) winner by unanimous decision (100-89 ,100-89 ,100-88 ) over John Brown (23-10, 11 KO's)

 

Fight 3  - 12 Round Super Welterweight/Jr. Middleweight Championship Bout 

WBC Super Welterweight Champion/WBA Super Welterweight Champion  Oscar "Golden Boy" De La Hoya (35-2, 28 KO's)  wins by TKO in round 11 (ref stoppage due to punches) over "Ferocious" Fernando Vargas (22-2, 20 KO's)   

 

Round 1

From the beginning of the round, both men started to box with De La Hoya landing a couple of combinations. De La Hoya was working his jab. Vargas got off to a slow start. Vargas lands a left hook and backs De La Hoya against the ropes.  De La Hoya was stunned. Vargas dominates against the ropes.

 

Round 2

De La Hoya works the body. De La Hoya works the jab from the center of the ring. De La Hoya lands a right cross. No damage to Vargas. Vargas  tries to corner De La Hoya. Tries to push him to the ropes. 

 

Round 3

Vargas jabs and tries to rush De La Hoya. De La Hoya shows lateral movement and escapes. Vargas lands a left hook to break up De La Hoya's dominance in the center of the ring. Vargas lands a hard right and backs De La Hoya to the ropes. Vargas works the body.  De La Hoya finally escapes back top the center of the ring. 

 

Round 4

De La Hoya lands a jab. Vargas counters. De La Hoya has an advantage in the center of the ring. Vargas dominates against the ropes. Both men box in the center of the ring. De La Hoya lands a left upper cut. Follows with a body punch. Right eye of Vargas begins to swell. Vargas lands a right on the ear of De La Hoya.

 

Round 5

Vargas gets a three punch combo in on De La Hoya. De La Hoya counters. Vargas starts to land on De La Hoya in the center of the ring. De La Hoya counters and stuns Vargas briefly. De La Hoya starts to bleed from the nose. Vargas starts to work the body against the ropes.

 

Round 6

Both men came out punching. Vargas starts to work the body in the center of the ring. Vargas starts to bleed under the right eye. De La Hoya works the jab from the center of the ring. Vargas lands two right hooks on De La Hoya at end of round. De La Hoya lands a punch after the bell rang.

 

Round 7

Both men box in the center of the ring. Vargas can not cut off the ring. Left hook lands for De La Hoya. Vargas tells him to bring it. De La Hoya shows lateral movement.

 

Round 8

De La Hoya lands a couple of rights on Vargas. Vargas shows no signs of being hurt. De La Hoya seems to be finding his range. Vargas looks frustrated at not being able to cut off the ring. Vargas tries to work the body. Seems to be loading up for one punch. De La Hoya dominates round.

 

Round 9

De La Hoya comes out punching. Gets backed-up by a Vargas body punch. Vargas works the body in close. De La Hoya resumes working the jab. Vargas tries to close the distance between the two. 

 

Round 10

Both men box in the center of the ring. Vargas again chases De La Hoya around the ring. De La Hoya uses his jab. De La Hoya stuns Vargas with a left hook at end of round. Both men are bleeding.

 

Round 11

Vargas chases De La Hoya around the ring. Left hook sends Vargas down. De La Hoya has Vargas pinned against the ropes.  Ref stops the fight due to punches.

Vargas did not shake the hand of De La Hoya after the fight. Vargas just left the ring. De La Hoya said after the fight that he isn't a lightweight (in a message to Vargas). He dedicated the fight to the Mexican people and that he wants to fight the fighters who he lost to (Mosley and Trinidad) in order to secure his legacy in boxing history. It was also reported that Vargas went to the hospital after the fight. We'll keep you posted.

 

Vargas Press Conference

Just to let you know Fernando Vargas held a press conference and took his defeat like a man. He said he just got caught with a good punch. He made no excuses. Kudos to Vargas for being honest and to De La Hoya for being a Professional. Thanks to Robert M. for the info.
