KOs, Tap Outs Settle Most Bouts On 7-Fight Card At Boardwalk Hall

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J., October 23, 2004. Matt Hughes re-gained a record sixth Ultimate Fighting

Championship® welterweight title and Light Heavyweight top contender Tito Ortiz got back in the title chase

in the co-main events of UFC 50: War Of 04 at Boardwalk Hall.

Hughes (38-4-0 in mixed martial arts) from Hillsboro, Ill., utilized a totally unexpected spinning arm bar to

defeat highly rated Canadian Georges St. Pierre (7-1-0) from Montreal, Quebec, at 4:59 of the first round.

Hughes dominated most of the round with a powerful body slam and his patented ground and pound offense

until he surprised St. Pierre and everyone in the arena with the arm bar move.

"It's not something new for me. I have used arm bars to defeat opponents before. But, it is the first time I

have used one to end a fight," Hughes said.

Hughes again made UFC history with his sixth title. No fighter has won that many championships in any

UFC weight division.

Ortiz (12-4-0) from Huntington Beach, Calif., dominated Canadian Patrick Cote (5-1-0) from Quebec City,

Quebec, to win a unanimous decision in three rounds. The victory ends a two-bout skid that saw the long-

reigning light heavyweight champ fall out of title contention with losses to current champ Randy Couture and

top contender Chuck Liddell. Ortiz easily won all three rounds with body slams and ground and pound.

"He caught me once in the first round with a good punch, but that was it. I was not really satisfied with my

overall performance. I wanted to end it sooner. Some times, fights just don't go the way you plan. But, it's a

victory," Ortiz said.

In other fights:
The middleweight swing bout was one of the night's most competitive and versatile Rich Franklin (18-1-0)

from Cincinnati, Ohio, finally prevailed over rugged Jorge Rivera (9-3-0) from Milford, Mass., with a tap out

by arm bar at 4:28 of the third round. Each pummeled the other and Franklin was ahead on the judges cards

by just a slight margin before it went to the ground with only 32 seconds remaining and he set the arm bar.

Rising welterweight Frank Trigg (12-2-0) from El Segundo, Calif., won his second straight UFC match with a

convincing TKO over Renato Verissimo (5-2-0) of Hilo, Hawaii at the 2:10 mark of the second round. Trigg

dominated the first round with strikes and on the ground and came out strong in round two. A combination

knocked Verissimo down and Trigg finished it on the ground with more punches. Referee Herbert Dean

stopped it.

Evan Tanner (32-4-0) from Gresham, Ore., welcomed rising UFC star Robbie Lawler (8-3-0) from

Davenport, Iowa, to the middleweight division with a triangle choke at the 2:22 mark of the first round and

Tanner won by tap out. The fighters traded punches early before Lawler picked up Tanner and slammed him

to the canvas. Lawler jumped into Tanner's guard and attempted to hit him with a left. His arm was extended

and Tanner quickly set the triangle. It was Lawler's first middleweight fight after a successful welterweight

career.

Middleweight Ivan Salaverry (9-3-1) of Seattle, Wash., made a triumphant return to UFC action and

defeated popular Miletich fighter Tony Fryklund (11-4-0) of Las Vegas, Nev., by tap out with a body lock at

1:36 of the first round. Salaverry got a quick advantage with a right hand strike to the forehead and a left kick

to the head. As Fryklund fell, Salaverry engaged the lock.

In the curtain raiser, Light Heavyweight contender Travis Lutter (7-1-0) from Ft. Worth, Tex., made an

impressive UFC debut by knocking out veteran Marvin Eastman (7-4-0) of Las Vegas, Nev., with a powerful

right hand at the:33 mark of the second round. The first round was uneventful as both fighters sought striking

opportunities and Eastman landed the most punches. But, Lutter stepped out at the start of the second and

hit Eastman right on the chin for a quick victory.
