If
you didn't get a chance to see the U.F.C last Friday, here is what you
missed.
Fight
1
Yves
Edwards vs. Joao Pierini (Both
weighed in at 155lbs.)
Both came out strong. Pierini having a 2nd degree black in Jiu-jitsu. One
would imagine he would take the
fight right to the ground. That wasn't the
case. He believed that he could
trade blows with Edwards who is a
seasoned Thai boxer. Pierini was wrong.
A few seconds into the first round, Edwards delivers a quick and
hard
round house kick to the neck and head area. It sends Pierini to the floor.
After a few seconds on his
back, the referee stands him up. Pierini
was complaining about his shoulder. It seemed that it could of hyper
extended when he received the
kick to his head. Unfortunately, he was unable to continue. Winner
Yves
Edwards over Joao Pierini by referee stoppage due to injury
(could not continue)
Fight
2
Tony Fryklund (5'9",181lbs) vs. Rodrigo Ruas (6'0",183lbs)
Both
come out wanting to finish each other quick. Ruas seemed to be getting the
best of the exchange on
their feet until Fryklund lands a right cross over
Ruas arm. Down goes Ruas. Fryklund takes advantage of the
opportunity
landing on top of Ruas. Ruas trying to play the open guard. Fryklund
landing a lot of punches to
the face of Ruas. The round ends. Round
two, both come out throwing bombs. Fryklund landing most of
them. Ruas
wants no part of the stand-up game anymore. Down to the ground they go.
Fryklund landing on
top, Ruas still trying to work with the open guard but
doesn't have any affect on Fryklunds game. Punch and
punch and punch some
more. From the open guard, the side mount and finally Fryklund was able to
get the
full mount and punch away landing many blows to the face of Ruas.
The referee stops the fight.
Winner
Tony Fryklund over Rodrigo Ruas by referee stoppage (punches
from the mount).
Fight
3
Robbie Lawler vs. Steve Berger
This was the fight that was
televised on the Best Damn Sports Show Period. They only showed the most
exciting moments of the fight.
Lawler dominating the fight on the top with Berger trying to take the
fight to the
ground. In round two,
Lawler connects with a good right hand to the face sending Berger to the
mat.
Wasting no time, Lawler jumps
on top of Berger landing many punches. The referee stops the fight.
Winner
Robbie Lawler over Steve Berger by referee stoppage (punches
from the mount).
Fight 4
Pete Spratt (5'9",169lbs) vs. Zach Light (5'8",
168lbs)
This was a classic fight - a
great striker in Spratt against a great wrestler in Light. Round one saw
Spratt
come out with two consecutive
high kicks to the head. Give Light credit, he blocks them both and wants
no
more part of the stand-up
game. He takes Spratt down. Spratt right away puts Light in his guard.
Light
scrambles to punch Spratt as
he pushes him close to the cage, thinking that this will give him the
advantage. Spratt on his back,
working from his guard against the gate, puts his right foot against the
gate
and spins underneath Light
rotating his hips. Sinking in a picture perfect arm bar. Light has to tap.
Winner
Pete Spratt over Zach Light by tap arm bar.
Fight 5
Benji Radach (6'0",169lbs) vs. Nick Serra (5'9",
167lbs)
Both came out very cautious. Radach, a good wrestler with good striking
ability, is able to avoid the take-
down. As Serra shoots again, it seems
that Radach connected with a straight right sending Serra to the
ground.
Finally they both end up on the ground, Radach punching to Serra's face.
Serra attempts a triangle
and gets it pretty deep. To Radach's credit, he
is able to escape and keeps on punching Serra in the face.
The second and
third rounds are more of the same. Serra taking Radach down but Radach
dominating the
ground with punches and control. With the exceptions of a
couple of times when Serra attempted a couple of
triangles with no
success. Toward the end of the third round, Radach connected with a right
hand sending
Serra to the mat again but this time Radach steps back .
Radach silently telling Serra get up and lets bang.
Serra gets up slowly,
not wanting any part of the stand-up game, quickly takes Radach down
ending the
third round.
Winner Benji Radach over Nick Serra by a unanimous decision.
Fight 6
Chuck Liddell (6'2", 204lbs) vs. Vitor Belfort
(6'0", 205lbs)
The fight everyone was waiting to see. Even though I already knew the
results, I still was looking forward to
seeing It. As they came out,
Liddell threw a couple of kicks. Belfort caught one and rushed Liddell to
the
ground and against the gate. Liddell was able to stand up. Some would
say that that in itself was an
incredible feat. Now Liddell is in his
world. Kicks and punches but the round ends. As they came out for the
second round, Belfort actually threw some kicks which actually landed,
hitting Liddell on the head. It seemed
that it had little or no affect.
The only thing that it did do is make Liddell more aggressive. Liddell
throws a
spinning 180 heel kick which lands right underneath Belfort's
armpit. Just a bit lower and it would of caught
the ribs, which could of
ended the fight. Both men picking and choosing their punches and kicks. As
the
round comes to an end, Belfort lands another left high kick to the
head. Belfort landed some good punches
and some good kicks but
Liddell was the more aggressive fighter landing the most punches and
kicks. They
came out for the third and final round. This round is like the
other two. Liddell landing the harder punches and
kicks of the two. About
a minute left in the last round, Belfort starts turning on the heat.
Delivering punches,
forcing Liddell to back peddle but as Liddell backs
up, he delivers a right which catches Belfort right on the
chin and brings
him down to the mat. Liddell rushes down to finish Belfort. But this is
Belfort's game - the
ground game . Liddell was unable to finish Belfort
as the bell rang. Winner
Chuck Liddell over Vitor Belfort
by a Decision
