MUSASHIMARU, the greatest American-born Yokozuna (Grand Champion) in Japanese professional sumo

is attending the fourth annual U.S. SUMO OPEN on April 6, 2004.  MUSASHIMARU, from Hawaii, stands

6'4" and weighs 520 pounds, and has won 12 grand sumo tournaments in Japan!  He also holds the record

for the most consecutive winning records ever in professional sumo – 55 tournaments in a row with a

majority of wins!!

 

World class sumo champions from all over the world will compete in weight and gender classes at the U.S.

SUMO OPEN.  There is also an open weight competition where athletes of all sizes compete together. 

Foreign teams and competitors are expected from countries such as the U.S., Japan, Korea, Hong Kong,

Australia, New Zealand, Hungary, Armenia, Georgia, Poland, and more.

 

The 4th annual US SUMO OPEN commemorates the 150th anniversary of U.S.-Japan relations.  On March

31, 1854, Commodore M.C. Perry of the U.S. and Japanese leaders signed the Treaty of Peace and Amity.

Japanese food and drink, including sushi, yakitori, chanko-nabe, beer, and sake are available at the U.S.

Sumo Open, and can be enjoyed during the competition.
