K-1 UPDATE
So K-1 had a press conference for the Battle at the Bellagio on Thursday. And from a scene straight out of a boxing press conference, Bob Sapp splashed water on his opponent Kimo. Now, Sapp, in a gesture that looked like he was going to apologize, instead, rammed his chest into Kimo a couple of times and the fighters had to be separated.
Shades of Tyson/Lewis, De La Hoya/Vargas, etc...
Was it planned?
Well, if it wasn't, it was poor sportsmanship on Sapp's part and we all know what happens eventually to those who don't show respect in the ring. But Sapp has been a gentleman inside and outside the ring so it's kind of hard to take seriously.
But the fight between the two will be no laughing matter. Sapp has been in the ring with a past K-1 champion - "Mr. Perfect" himself, Ernesto Hoost. Hoost has defeated such notables as Mirko "Cro Crop" Filipovic, Igor Vovchanchyn, and Maurice Smith. And Sapp has a first round TKO and a second round KO over Hoost.
Kimo will have to be smart for this fight. This is the way we see things shaping up so long as Kimo sticks to a game plan and not revert to NHB.
The first round should see Sapp on the attack - Trying to corner Kimo and chop him down with those big clubs. Kimo should be able to give lateral movement and not got pinned down. He'll need to work the legs the way Marcos Ruas did with Paul Varlens at the UFC. He'll need to stay out of Sapp's range so expect a lot of back peddling and side stepping. Knowing Kimo, he'll probably try to jab a little and spring in with a hard right to the head. As long as he follows it up and doesn't stop, he should be able to get away and start working the legs again. Sapp will be stalking but won't land much. He may corner Kimo and Kimo will cover up but as soon as he gets a load of Sapp's power, he'll be back on the bicycle. That's pretty much the way round one will end.
The second round sees Sapp becoming frustrated and wanting to mix it up. Kimo should still be working the legs and by this time, we should start seeing welts develop on Sapp's leg. Remember, Kimo has a Tae Kwon Do background so he knows how to kick. Sapp should start favoring one leg and that's when Kimo will come in with a barrage of punches and escape and continue to work the bruised leg. The round ends with Kimo on the attack.
The last round should see Kimo attack the leg relentlessly and Sapp going down for the count. At 1:50 of the third round, Kimo wins by TKO.
Now, if Kimo reverts back to his old style of muscle and power and to hell with conditioning, he'll get KO'd by the end of round one.
Also, Gary Turner failed an eye exam and will be replaced by Jeff Ford in the tournament. Michael McDonald is favored at 2-1 to win the event. Vernon "Tiger" White is 5-1 to take it all.
We wish all the fighters good luck but especially to Vernon "Tiger" White who has been a great friend to thefightgame.tv.
