As we all know, boxing doesn't have the sharpest record when it comes to decisions at the end of bouts. My estimation is about 90% (give or take 40% -sarcasm) of the audience sees the fight one way and the actual judges see it the complete opposite.
Whose wrong?
I don't know, but if I were a betting man, I would not bet on the 10%. And lately, the boxing judging trend seems to be spewing over into MMA.
As the old saying goes, be careful for what you wish for because you just might get it.
We all wanted MMA to have the same exposure and money as our sister sport boxing does.
And it's slowly getting there.
I guess we have to learn to take the good with the bad.
By bad, I mean the bad decisions.
To all the fighters - when you go to fight, make sure you are healthy and ready to fight - make sure you win by submission, TKO, or KO.
I hate to be so cynical but I just wouldn't want to leave it in the judges hands.
Maybe Extreme Brawl over in the UK has it right - no judges unless it's a title bout - all other matches that go the distance end in a draw.
I know, I know - in some bouts it's clear who won. But clear to who?
You, me, the judges, the ref, etc... Who's to say we will all agree on the outcome.
Again, I know it's the judges that count. But sometimes they all see a fight differently.
The fight game is too subjective.
Not to say that all judges are bad but sometimes, they just might not see a fight the way you and I see it and other times it leaves you wondering what fight did they see.
I don't necessarily like the idea of all bouts ending in a draw but what can be done that will make everyone happy?
All in all, I'm saying that if you go to fight, then fight and win decisively because if it's close at the end, and you think you did enough to win, you might as well just toss a coin and call it in the air because you never know what the judges are going to do.
Good luck to all fighters and their camps.
My two cents, Al
