Durata Fights: Grand Prix Tournament

From our friends in Croatia comes the third installment of the Durata Fights Grand Prix tournament on

December 12, 2003.  The Grand Prix tournament consists of three qualifying events plus the final. Each

event consists of an 8-man MMA tournament for fighters 198 lbs. plus. The bouts take place in a ring and

the two finalist of each qualifying event will advance to the Grand Prix Final (two from each tournament plus

two wild card fighters). 

 

The third international tournament will be held in Crikvenica, Croatia. Fighters expected to participate are

Extreme Brawl veteran Tengiz Tedoradze, PRIDE veteran Valentijn Overeem, Michael Knaap, Roman

Savochka, Andrey Rudakov, Gregor Jankovi, Sander Scholing, and Milco Voorn.

The first qualification tournament was held on May 3rd (2003) in Zagreb (Croatia) where Igor Pokrajac and

Andre Castro advanced while the second qualification tournament was held on August 10th (2003) in Opatij

(Croatia). The winner of that event was PRIDE Bushido veteran Rodney Faverus, who won over Miodrag

Petkovic (who also advanced to the finals). Fighters that also participated in the last event were Valeriy

Pliev, Nikolai Onikienko, Dave Dalgliesh, and the "Iron Man" Travis Fulton (lost on points in the first

round of the tournament).

 

The winner of the Grand Prix final will receive 80,000 Euro or $95, 794.28 USD (as of today's exchange

rate). Second place will receive 20,000 Euro or $23, 948.57 USD (as of today's exchange rate).
