Crown Fighting Championship Recap \ Gallery II
Corona Plaza Hotel (Rosarito) September 4, 2004
And
away we went... (Mexico). We were there for the first installment of the Crown Fighting Championship (CFC). We really didn't know what to expect as it was Labor Day weekend and Rosarito beach was the place to be (at least everyone we spoke to kept telling us that). But as this event was put together by the same promoter as Reto Maximo, we knew that he would do everything he could to put on a great show.
We walked around the hotel for a bit and it was a nice hotel with the beach right in front so if fighting wasn't your thing, no problem, there were plenty of other activities to keep you busy.
As we walked around and started to see and talk with the fighters, we started to realize that it wasn't as easy to get to the hotel as we thought. It was easy for us as we speak the language and could easily communicate with everyone but for those that were there for the first time, we could see how it must have been hard.
So out of the ten scheduled fights, we got to see six. And with fighters like Mike Seal, Antonio Mckee, Joey Alvarado, Rudy Martinez and Mexico's own Akbarh Arreola, we knew it was going to be an exciting show.
crowd was most definitely into the fights.
The first fight saw Joey Alvarado put on a quick and impressive win. As soon as the fight began, he came out aggressive with fast landing kicks and punches - and then it went to the ground and he was able to secure an arm bar and pulled it like there was no tomorrow forcing Horeb Capuchino to tap.
the advantage being the aggressor and landing on top when they went to the ground but Smith quickly applied
the triangle and held it
till
Tolivar taped. warriors - Luis Eduardo Munguia and Rudy Martinez gave it there all in a battle that continually went back and forth. Both fighters were about even for the first half of the first round - with Munguia taking Martinez immediately to the ground - Martinez went for a guillotine from the bottom but Munguia battled out of it. Munguia then was trying to work the mount but Martinez showed very good defense and was able to reverse position. The rest of the first round went much the same way with Martinez trying to finish Munguia off with a kimora from the bottom and working it while Munguia battled to stay out of it - Martinez reversed position still trying to lock in the kimora but Munguia battled and eventually got out of it. The second round saw even more action as they both traded knees and blows but Munguia found some good openings and was able to land some good punches to the face of Martinez - Martinez was able to keep it together and took the fight to the ground where he was able to show a more dominant ground game than Munguia - With the second round coming to an end, both were on their feet and Martinez pushes Munguia back a little and does a jumping scissor leg sweep that puts Munguia back on the mat - Martinez goes for a toe hold but Munguia battled out of it and the round ends. The crowd was on its feet clapping and yelling for a third round. This by the fan reaction and many peoples account was the fight of the night. The outcome was a draw but there was talk of re-matching these two again.
fights went pretty much the same way - Ian and Mike just dominated their opponents with a barrage of punches and or kicks - Ian's opponent corner threw in the towel as he was receiving punishing blows on the ground. Mike's opponent could not continue 36 seconds into their fight after receiving some punishing kicks when he was on
the ground. Arreola down and attempting the ground and pound - Mckee was successful taking Arreola down but could not finish him - Arreola was able to hold on until they stood them up - there is where he did his damage - Arreola was able to tag Mckee on several occasions with kicks but Mckee was able to bring the fight back to the ground - that's how it went through the entire fight - when it was all over, the judges declared it a draw.
The first installment of the Crown Fighting Championship was a success - And between fights, CFC promoter Marco 'Tony' Perez welcomed PRIDE FC fighter Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira to the ring and the crowd welcomed him with a stranding ovation. Throughout the night, "Minotauro" was surrounded by fans and he happily signed the autographs and posed for pictures. And the ring girls plus the girls from realgirlz.net did a great job entertaining the crowd.
It was a great night for all and we definitely look forward to covering the next event.
TheFightGame.tv would like to thank Mr. Tony Perez and the Crown Plaza Hotel for their Great Hospitality.
Til next time, Al
